Spirit horse. Guía espiritual: el caballo.

18/12/2013

We welcomed the dawn over the Sea of Cortez as we had said goodbye to the twilight over the Pacific. And that means we took a lot of photos. A lot. And then we started down. And down. And down. And down. And finally, after numerous saddle and pack readjustments we made it to the valley floor. And we rode for hours more. So we were on Chema's turf now. He either knew or was related to every person on that side of the Guadalupes and we took advantage of that. Don Nacho, of course, had ridden ahead and by the time we got to the mouth of the valley he was long gone, following the road to the sea. But we took a short cut. Pointed in the right direction by one of the many useful parientes we went up an over the hills on an old, deep trail. It was rugged and colorful, pristine and beautiful. Seldom have I felt so connected to the world an a very basic level and so at peace as when riding over that lovely piece of land.

Muchas. Y luego comenzamos a bajar. Y bajar. Y bajar. Y bajar.

And maybe we were all feeling that way because just at the moment when we had lost the trail for a bit and weren't sure where to go, a black horse appeared on hill ahead of us. He or she was small, well formed, and curious. He, lets call it a he, looked us over and when we started to move near he spun on a dime and hooves flying-tail streaming he raced down the trail that we had lost. But not far. He stopped, looked back as if to say "come on, you poor lost folks, I'll help you", and waited for us to get just close enough before high-tailin' it farther away. We followed that horse to the road, and the on the road for a bit until we got to the ranch. Here he went of to the side, watched us go by and trotted back the way we had came, satisfied with a job well done, and of in search of the next troop of lost wanderers to rescue.

El Dátil is a kind and beautiful ranch, with a cool stone ranch house, a big warm kitchen and a flourishing vegetable garden. The ladies of the house also make a killer roast kid (talkin' about baby goats here, ok) and tell wonderful stories. The señora wants to relive the days of cattle herding that she used to do, in lieu of brothers, and take her whole family on a cabalgata with her. Now that is a woman after my own heart.

Memories. Memorias.

17/12/2013

Ok, we got there! Wait, where? To the movie stars house! This woman appeared in the documentary "Los Otros Californios", so really a documentary star. And again with the names, I'm so sorry! I will investigate them as soon as I can, promise! Bu we did make it.

Ok, llegamos!

Our host is an old woman now. She lives by herself. She has good neighbors who help out when they can but she is a lonely woman, living literally at the end of the road and in desperate need of companionship. Her own mother had just passed away and never have I seen a more calmly distraught person. Yes, I know that is a contradiction but I can't explain it any other way. She was relatively calm and collected, showing us pictures of her mother and herself as if desperately trying to cling on to past moments, to implant them in someone else, to keep the memory of her mother the "ángel" alive. And so, at times, the facade would crack and her deep pain pored into her voice and eyes in a deluge to powerful for words... but only for a minute. Than she would recuperate and offer to make us some tortillas for the road. We accepted and promised to return. That time hasn't come yet but I'm sure we all anticipate it.

Nuestra anfitriona es ahora una señora mayor. Vive sola.

After visiting the ruins and saying goodbye to the Doña, we started up. Literally. An old, old road, that I can fairly say is only passable to four-footed creatures these days winds up the canyons and cliffs of the Sierra de Guadalupe and, after hours of climbing, finally pauses at a rock wall; the vista, the great divide, the splitting of the watershed, the connection between east and west on this rocky spit of land. The sun was leaving us so we waited out the night at our eagle post.

The night of the magic fire. La noche de la fogata mágica.

12/16/2013

Since I don't know when I'll get myself to sit down and work through some more episodes I'm going to power through tonight and finish the first section of the Mula Mil! Whoopeeeee! And only a year (and some) behind schedule! :) This would sound a lot more impressive if we had more than three days to go... which we don't.

Siiiiii!

Alright, so we left the garden ranch early to embark on more perilous road-riding. We were going up-valley towards the majestic Sierra de Guadalupe (roughly at the same latitude as Mulegé, for you coast people). We wanted to stop that night at the house of a movie star (more on that later) and that the ruins of the Misión de Guadalupe, a few old bricks in testimony of the formidable jesuit priests that moved through desert and history to carry out their mission. (Hey! Is that where the phrase "I'm on a mission" comes from?).

Anyway, road riding, road riding, road riding, you all know how I feel about that.

Didn't actually make it to the movie star's house (I'm gettin' to it!) but we did camp at a lovely orchard and had a beautiful surprise. The full moon rose triumphant over the hills and at the same exact instant our fire... turned blue!!!!! And if you don't believe me, ask Leslie. Wait, that's not a good idea (for those of you who now Les, you understand :) ). April Fools! The fire did turn blue but not because it was magic; only Leslie has that kind on magic ;)

Y si no me creo, pregúntenle a Leslie.

Oh my mule! This is bad!!! Oh mi mula! Qué mal!!!!

Wow... what can I say; time flies when you are having fun! Since the last time we talked (read?, shared?, communicated?) I have got a job in environmental education, am living in La Paz with Chris and having a great time. Oh, and Luna? Had puppies!!! Maybe you heard but we had ten little hounds all around here and it was a heavenly mess. Now they are all with families, except for one little cutie who gets to stay with mom and grandma because, well... you know... they're so cute!!! Look out little guy or you'll be on the next Mula Mil (2.0)!

15/12/2013

Speaking of Mula Mil 2.0: So we left off last time losing and finding Don Nacho. Eventually caught up to him and all good. Until the next morning. He was up an' at 'em much earlier then we EVER managed to get up and going so he rode of into the sunrise with a wave saying he was going to the next ranch to get a cup of coffee. We got along just fine this time (following an actually road helps immensely in the 'not getting lost' department). It was a road meandering along the bottom of a wide arroyo with big, lush mesquite trees every once in a while. We rode up to a cute little ranch just a little after Don Nacho himself. The ranch lady, standing under her eucalyptus, was very kind and good at giving us directions to our next destination. See, we needed to get into the next valley over but going by road would be excruciatingly long, so the lady gave us directions about following a trail up and over a saddleback ridge that wold cut hours, if not days, off of the itinerary.

We said "Adiós!" and went of like the herd of turtles we were. Apparently the ranch folk, and probably the current political party in need of votes, had the same idea about long roads we had; the first part of that beautiful old trail up the ridge? In the process of getting bulldozed and dynamited to make way for the expedient new road. I don't know if it is totally finished but I can say with utmost certainty... we were the last cabalgata to use that old section of historical trail. Food for thought.

Interesantes pensamientos.

We managed to get up and over by walking our mules. The trail was steep, slippery, and treacherous but we made it and got rewarded down the rode on the other side by one of the most beautiful pools of water I have ever seen ANYWHERE! And so was born the Mula Mil 2.0. We couldn't follow our hearts and thirsty bodies and stay at that pool... we had a deadline to be somewhere at sometime for something. But "we'll just have to do it again!" was our new motto and it, along with "next time!" got sorely over-used on the rest of the trip.

Finally, after more road-riding than any of us care to admit to, we made it to a garden enthused goat ranch and met a woman who my mom had met 25 years ago, or something like that, on one of her first trips! The woman, then a child, is married now, and you and she will have to forgive me for I wrote nothing down and now, a year later, cannot remember her name. I will get back to you on that. Anyway, they exchanged stories and food for dinner (chorizo and papas anyone?) and we got directions for our next segment.

Losing Don Nacho. Perdiendo a Don Nacho.

14/Diciembre/2013
Yeah, no frost! Actually it was relatively warm; a north wind picked up and chased most of the cold away.
Si, no hubo escarcha!

Went on a very very bushy trail... Nacho got lost a few tomes and then I or Chema would pick it back up, but we would lose time every time that happened obviously, so it was a slow day. Eventually we lost Nacho, as in he went ahead saying "It's easy from here, you can make it!". Well, not quite as easy as he made it out to be . We followed his mules tracks down a steep hill and as I was in front and concentrating on the trail I didn't see the nasty cholla hiding evilly in another bushy plant. I got a spine in my foot for my lack of attention and did a balancing act, swinging my foot up over my mules neck and swaying back and forth while I took of my shoe and sock to get the nasty little bugger out. Soon after we got to a small arroyo bottom were Nacho was waiting for us in the shade of a beautiful big leafy mesquite tree.

We had our lunch but before we were even finished Nacho up and left again. We thought for sure we'd get lost that time but the trail from then on down the arroyo to the west was actually very clear and easy to follow. We came out in an arroyo with lots of water and met a man with a very skinny dog, who told us (the man, not the dog) that Nacho was waiting for us up ahead at his ranch (the mans ranch, not Nacho's) and to hurry up! However, when we got to the rancho no Nacho, so we continued following tracks, on a road, for about and hour. We found Nacho camped in a very large arroyo with a huge pool of water and a nice bedrock area for the kitchen, so we set up camp too, even though it was still kinda early.

There was an incredible northerly blowing so to actually sleep we all set up saddle barriers and hid behind bags and tarps so we wouldn't fly away! (We decided not to set up tents, so we could get an earlier start). We also got to wash clothes, hair and bodies in the pool. Very cold water! To warm up again we had a ramen soup for dinner.

Dusting of the pages... Sacudiendo el polvo de las páginas

Once more back at the writing (typing?) board. I have been here, there and everywhere working this last couple of months but I finally have a breather and here I am, to catch up on everything!
I can't believe it's been almost three months since we finished the trip... already it seems like a lifetime ago. Hope that by writing and remembering I can keep it close for a little while longer.
So, I invite you to go back, take a look at the last entry ( a couple of days out of La Purísima) and enjoy the last two sections of the Mula Mil that I have for you.
Cheers!

Salud!

We're done!... sort of. Ya terminamos!... mas o menos.

Hey ya'll!
Well, in real time we have finished the riding part of the trip (so much more left to do!) but you guys are lucky! I still have at least a months worth of backed up entries to post and you get to read them and continue living or adventure even after its done! Cool, right? XD

Chido, no? XD
