Losing Don Nacho. Perdiendo a Don Nacho.

14/Diciembre/2013
Yeah, no frost! Actually it was relatively warm; a north wind picked up and chased most of the cold away.
Si, no hubo escarcha!

Went on a very very bushy trail... Nacho got lost a few tomes and then I or Chema would pick it back up, but we would lose time every time that happened obviously, so it was a slow day. Eventually we lost Nacho, as in he went ahead saying "It's easy from here, you can make it!". Well, not quite as easy as he made it out to be . We followed his mules tracks down a steep hill and as I was in front and concentrating on the trail I didn't see the nasty cholla hiding evilly in another bushy plant. I got a spine in my foot for my lack of attention and did a balancing act, swinging my foot up over my mules neck and swaying back and forth while I took of my shoe and sock to get the nasty little bugger out. Soon after we got to a small arroyo bottom were Nacho was waiting for us in the shade of a beautiful big leafy mesquite tree.

We had our lunch but before we were even finished Nacho up and left again. We thought for sure we'd get lost that time but the trail from then on down the arroyo to the west was actually very clear and easy to follow. We came out in an arroyo with lots of water and met a man with a very skinny dog, who told us (the man, not the dog) that Nacho was waiting for us up ahead at his ranch (the mans ranch, not Nacho's) and to hurry up! However, when we got to the rancho no Nacho, so we continued following tracks, on a road, for about and hour. We found Nacho camped in a very large arroyo with a huge pool of water and a nice bedrock area for the kitchen, so we set up camp too, even though it was still kinda early.

There was an incredible northerly blowing so to actually sleep we all set up saddle barriers and hid behind bags and tarps so we wouldn't fly away! (We decided not to set up tents, so we could get an earlier start). We also got to wash clothes, hair and bodies in the pool. Very cold water! To warm up again we had a ramen soup for dinner.

Dusting of the pages... Sacudiendo el polvo de las páginas

Once more back at the writing (typing?) board. I have been here, there and everywhere working this last couple of months but I finally have a breather and here I am, to catch up on everything!
I can't believe it's been almost three months since we finished the trip... already it seems like a lifetime ago. Hope that by writing and remembering I can keep it close for a little while longer.
So, I invite you to go back, take a look at the last entry ( a couple of days out of La Purísima) and enjoy the last two sections of the Mula Mil that I have for you.
Cheers!

Salud!

Last leg! Última jornada!

Hey ya'll! I know that with me we just left La Purísima but in actual time we are nearing our goal of Tecate and also nearing the bottom of our purse.
Expenses sometimes ran higher than expected in our effort to include local people in our logistics, paying people like Beto (our driver from the Las Ánimas area), to support them supporting us. So to finish the trip and make sure our mules still have enough to eat until the very end we must call on your help again! Here is the link to our fund-raising sight and every little cent helps our whole Mula Mil community. Thank you!

<iframe src="http://www.indiegogo.com/project/la-mula-mil-1000-miles-in-mexico-by-mule-the-final-stage/widget" width="224px" height="486px" frameborder="0" scrolling="no"></iframe>

Gracias!

Just a regular day on the trail. Un día normal en el camino.

12/12/2013
The food survived! No pigs got to it, although I did think I heard some shuffling during the night but that might have been mom, up for a pee break. It was still cloudy though but not cold so we took some time getting things packed and organized and onto our mules. I swear the donkey carried a load about the same size as himself! Didn't slow him down any.

More road riding but about two hours down the road we turned of onto a seldom used dirt track through the desert that was certainly more picturesque than the graded highway we were on before. We got to a ranch that is used in the summer only (right now the people are up in the higher mountains were there is more feed for their goats) that had a windmill to haul water up from the well. Only problem: it didn't work! So Chris climbed up onto the 8 foot high pila and dropped a bucket into the water, only a couple feet down, to give a drink to our mules. We also went into the ranch house and we figured that if the people were there they would be more than willing for us to take some of the cleaner well water that they have in a cistern near the house for our drinking water, so we went ahead and filled up three of our water bags. Thank you, owners of Arena Blanca!
Único problema: no funciona!

As we rode along the rest of the afternoon I realized I had forgotten to charge my iPod, which I usually listen to on the road parts because they're just not as interesting as the trails. But I also realized I really didn't miss it, which got me thinking about how when I'm out riding in the middle of nowhere in particular I really don't miss much that "civilization" has to offer. I don't feel the need to be on facebook or to watch the new Big Bang Theory episode, or go to a movie, message with my friends. I certainly don't miss driving and I do like cooking on fires and sleeping in a sleeping bag under the stars. It makes me truly believe that modern society is overrated and a move back to the basics is an awesome idea. I'll compare notes on that thought though, after I've had a hot shower and a soft mattress :)

Anyway, it started getting later and darker but we just couldn't find a place with good feed for the mulas. We finally settled down on the edge of and arroyo ( no water in this one) where there is just a snack really for the mules and we'll try to get to a spot tomorrow early so these guys can eat a little bit better.

My mom and I made chicken mole tostadas tonight, a camp favorite. We even had avocados! And yes, we are going to write up and publish a Mula Mil cookbook eventually so you too can enjoy all the wonderful meals we did:Note, it probably tastes even better when you are very hungry and has been cooked over a campfire!

Ready to ride! Lista para cabalgar!

Back in the saddle again...
De regreso a la cabalgada...

And I never thought a week would make a difference but man, do my butt bones hurt tonight!

We got out late from La Purísima, half because it was a planned late start and half because we really didn't want to move fast. Also, it had drizzled during the night and things needed some time to dry out a bit. And we even got out kinda earlier than we thought because once again we found a friend who took our stuff, two mules, my mom and Lucky in his car to our next campsite.

So, mostly road riding and kinda chilly, like enough to wear a jacket and keep your hands in your pockets. Riding over the mesas it's fun to see how the vegetation grows, pushing up through the rocks so only the biggest and toughest plants make it. Then dropping into the canyon called Old La Purísima with tons of date palms and also tons of black half-feral pigs eating all the dates!

In fact, we are a little nervous about our food tonight, even though we stuck as much as we could into the mesquite trees: hopefully it'll still be there tomorrow! Mom had already set up camp so all we did was gather more fire wood and water our mules. Tonights dinner was delicious too, we had some chicken tamales from Loreto and some beans (of course). We also used up some of our go bad veggies like tomatoes and lettuce for a nice salad. For first night back out I must say it was a pretty good day.

10/12/2013
Seriously long day today... And I didn't even ride!
So I was in La Paz for about a week, from last tuesday to this tuesday and in that interim I got some things done but mostly had my time wasted bureaucrats... Yet again a story for another time. Somehow I managed to convince Chris to joins us for this part of the Mula Mil, from La Purísima to San Ignacio. So at 5 am this morning we left La Paz, actually got out of town at six and made it to Loreto by 10. Chris and Luna slept all the way.

Right, because Chris was super tired from taking a 10 day WFR that he just finished last night ( I suspect the after party was the actual tiring part) and Luna sleeps perpetually anyway.

Once in Loreto my mom called me from a phone booth in the little town of La Purísima with a list of all the veggies she needed from town and some other camp gear that was left at the house. So with about three hours of sleep off put by four hours of early morning driving i set to work getting all that together.

Finally we had it all under control and we called up a friend of a friend, Emilio Rosas, who drove us all out here. But first we dropped Luna off at her new sitter, our friend Elena... Poor woman has no idea what she's getting into :). We thought Luna would cry and howl and mourn our leaving but of course thats not the case... She immediately started exploring and playing with Relámpago, Elena's little dog. So much for undying love bond.

Anyway, we drove back to Cd. Insurgentes where we picked up some last minute stuff at the store and an old friend of he family, UABCS professor Fermín Reygadas (some of you might know him also as a narrator of Corazon Vaquero). The 5 of us, Chema being the fifth person whom came with us from Loreto, drove on up a very nicely paved road with amazingly clear signs all the way to La Purísima and a little beyond into San Isidro. As we came down the ridge into the valley the sun was just on the horizon and the colors of the place were spectacular! Reds, ochres, oranges, soft browns, bright sunset bringing out the best green of the palm trees and reflecting of the arroyo water. Plus, the iconic Pilón de La Purísima, or at least that is what I think it's called.

Wasn't to hard to find the huerta where the group was camping, everyone seemed to know where the gringas were. Everyone was glad to see us, I think, even Lucky who got abused in the form of forced sweater wearing, a gift from a previous client. And that was pretty much it. It's probably gonna be a slow start tomorrow, just to get all the new stuff packed up, but here's to at least 20 k tomorrow. Final-stretch-of-the-first-part-of-the-Mula Mil, here we come!
