We woke up, as usual, with glorious
ideas of leaving at 8 am. We know how that story goes. At 10ish myself, my mom
and Chema, pulled out of my mom’s house in San Ignacio, heading for the other
side of the highway and freedom. Local vaqueros rode with us, happy for the
chance to get out and make some noise! As we topped a little hill on our route
due east, a most amazing site played before our eyes. We were back on the
Camino Real! It stretched before us in al its volcanic glory, a straight shot
across the desert. It seemed we could follow it for hours like a highway and we
did.
All day we rode this trail, until the very tail end of sunset when we found our camp at an old pila that used to belong to mining company of El Boleo, in Santa Rosalía. I had never realized the influence of the operation extended that far into the mountains, but looking out across the vista to a stunning sunset on the Volcán de las Tres Vírgenes I am again reminded that distance can be relative in a desert where water is life.
